This is the 3rd part of our series How to become a successful blogpreneur. In this article, we will be uncovering what are the things needed before setting up a blog. Highlights some tips on how to select a domain name for your blog and provide few guidelines in selecting the best web hosting provider. Then finally, after we get everything ready, I will show you (with pictures) the step by step procedure on how to setup a blog.

STEP 1: Getting Ready Before Setting Up a Blog

First things first, we need to prepare the things needed before we dive into setting up our blog. This include domain name and hosting. Then we will install our chosen content management system (CMS) that will hold our blog in proper order and presentation.

What is Domain Name

Domain name is your identity in the web. Your business identity in the whole world wide web. Figuring out how to choose a domain name is similar to figuring out how to choose a company name. It requires a lot of thought and consideration. Why because, as blogpreneur, your domain name will soon become your own brand. That is why, you want to make sure to choose a domain name that not only fits your business, but is also easy to find and promote.

Pointers in Picking the Best Domain Name

1. Keep it Short

Easy to type and easy to remember. If your domain name is long and complex, you risk customers mistyping or misspelling it. Short and simple is the way to go.

2. Avoid Numbers and Hyphens

Numbers and hyphens are often misunderstood — people who hear your website address don’t know if you’re using a numeral (5) or it’s spelled out (five) or they misplace or forget the dash.

STEP 2: Connecting your Domain Name to Hosting

As we follow along with our step by step procedure, I assume that at this moment, we already have a Domain Name and Hosting account ready to setup. Its time to put things together.

Assigning domain name to your Hosting cPanel

To begin, you will need to be logged in to your Bluehost control panel.

  1. Click the Domains tab from the side navigation menu to the left as shown above.
  2. Click Assign from the submenu.
  3. Choose if you will assign a new domain to your account or one that is already associated with your account.
  4. If you are assigning a new domain, you must verify ownership of the domain name. There are three ways this can be done:
      • Name Servers: Update your Name Servers to ns1.Bluehost.com and ns2.Bluehost.com. (We will use this option. See No 5).
      • A Record: Point the A record to the IP address indicated on the screen.
      • Create HTML Page: Create an HTML page on your existing host containing the case-sensitive text provided.
      • EPP Code: This will not transfer your domain name but use the EPP code to verify ownership.

Linking Domain Name through Bluehost Name Servers.

  1. Open your Namecheap account select Domain List from the left sidebar
  2. Click the Manage button next to your domain in the list.
  3. Then find the Nameservers section and select Custom DNS from the drop-down menu as shown below.

4. Update your Name Servers to ns1.Bluehost.com and ns2.Bluehost.com. Note: When the nameservers are entered, press the green checkmark to save changes, as shown above.

Thats it. Your domain name is already connected to your hosting. Please note, it may take about 24-48 hours for your domain to propagate after the nameservers update to be resolving properly worldwide.

STEP 3: Installing WordPress

By the way, let me just give you a headstart why we are using WordPress.

Installing WordPress through your Hosting Control Panel

  1. From you cPanel, Click on the My Sites tab from the side navigation menu to the left.
  2. Click the Create Site button.

3. New windows appear for two highly recommended website builders.

4. Click the Start Building button under the WordPress option.

5. Enter the Admin Information:

  • Site Name – This will be the name displayed on your site. This is not the URL but simply the name used on your site.
  • Site Tagline – This should reflect a brief description of your website.
  • The installer will take a couple of minutes to install your application. Once done:

7. Hover over your site to manage, and click Manage Site.

On the upper right-most corner (as shown above), click Log into WordPress.

Installing WordPress Themse and Plugins

After installing WordPress from your Bluehost CPanel, the next thing to do is to customize your blog according to your needs and preferences.

Take note, the installation you just done already has the basic WordPress themes and plugins.

But there’s more. WordPress has tons of choices for themes, just hover down to the lower left side of your wordpress dashboard and click Appearance, then click Themes. Select which ever suites your preferred niche. Note, you will find here both premium and free themes.

As for Plugins, you can do the same. But just be clever on installing plugins. Install whenever required otherwise don’t. They might drag your blog speed down.

Keeping in mind that the purpose of our blog is to earn money. Unlike before, blogging is just a mere hobby, where we write what we want — anything under the sun. This time, we want to focus our efforts on blog topics with high earning potentials.

In blogging there is no such jack of all trade. Authority here would mean two things. First, the more you read, write and share about your topic, you learn. Blogpreneur is a person who operates a blog as a business. Initial Public Offering: Filinvest REIT is priced at 7 pesos per share

Filinvest Land Incorporated, one of the country’s largest property developers with an established portfolio of residential, commercial, industrial, and office developments is entering the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) market with the establishment of Filinvest REIT Corp. (FILREIT).

As per the latest notice from the PSE EDGE, Filinvest REIT is priced at 7 Pesos per share, reduced from its indicative maximum price of PhP8.30 per share, bringing its total offer size to PhP12.6 billion.

The IPO is expected to run from July 26 to August 3, 2021.

The Filinvest REIT will be listed on August 12, 2021 under the ticker symbol FILRT.

Filinvest REIT Corp. or FILREIT (FILRT), features the highly competitive and attractive portfolio of office buildings which cater mainly to multinational Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firms.

Filinvest REIT’s buildings are located in Northgate Cyberzone, a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)-registered IT Park in Filinvest City, Alabang.

Competitive rental rates and fiscal and non-fiscal incentives arising from its PEZA registration attracts BPO companies to lease office spaces in Northgate Cyberzone. Another building is located in Cebu Cyberzone in Lahug, Cebu City, where tenants enjoy various fiscal and non-fiscal benefits.

Filinvest REIT Corp has an initial portfolio of 17 fully operational Grade A office buildings with a gross leasable area (GLA) totaling to over 300,000 square meters.

As of April 30, 2021 Filinvest REIT Corp buildings are averaging to 90.3 percent occupancy rate where mostly of its tenants ate the multinational business process outsourcing (BPO) firms.

In the Philippines, hiring priorities have undergone a gradual but significant shift, especially in organizations that are at the leading edge of innovation. These days, landing a great job is less about the resumes you write or how you answer questions at a job interview. While those are still very important, business owners and team managers are now more and more likely to pay more attention to the values a candidate demonstrates.

It’s fair to say that the landscape of job hiring in the Philippines hasn’t just undergone a technological shift, but a cultural one as well. While the Filipino emphasis on loyalty and warmth remains, they are increasingly less important than the values below.

1.) Confidence

Most hiring managers and job owners will tend to gravitate towards candidates that display confidence in their job interviews and resumes. This is partly because Filipino culture values deference to authority, which means more confident candidates are far more likely to be noticed. Where the past, confident candidates may be rejected for seeming “arrogant” by local standards, confidence is now highly sought-after for most positions, particularly in leadership roles.

2.) Perseverance

While degrees and certificates are still valued, Filipino employers these days are more likely to be impressed with candidates that show perseverance. As far as many hiring managers are concerned, degrees, certificates, and job experience do not mean as much as the ability to persevere and adapt to different challenges head-on.

This is partly due to the fast pace at which many technologies and techniques become outdated, rendering most types of certification a temporary benefit to businesses. Instead, more business owners find it far more useful to hire people who have core values such as perseverance, as it allows them to meet diverse challenges in the long-term.

3.) A sense of self-worth

While traditional Filipino businesses may still value blind loyalty, managers in new startups and top-performing companies these days are more likely to value employees who understand what they’re worth. This should be kept in mind when you evaluate different organizations to apply in.

Passive loyalty is no longer enough to earn or retain a great job in an organization that matters. In the Philippines, jobs were historically kept because of loyalty rather than merit. These days, however, businesses are far less likely to appreciate or return that loyalty, as profits and performance become more of a key motivator in the local job landscape.

4.) Passion

Most business owners will naturally want to hire people who take the job seriously. Showing passion and enthusiasm at your job interview and during your probationary period is a sure-fire way to nail the position. That is, if you show the other qualities on this list.

5.) Honesty

This might seem a bit obvious. After all, who doesn’t claim to value honesty? But as much as many Filipino business owners and managers say they value honesty, this may not exactly be true. In traditional Filipino companies, honesty is often interpreted as negativity, something that has signaled the death of many careers. Even pointing out something that could be done better will often earn the ire of business owners and coworkers alike.

 

Thankfully, Filipino businesses are starting to move away from this way of thinking, finally understanding that an acknowledgment of failures is necessary for growth. Today, there are plenty of local and international companies in the Philippines with a work culture that truly values honesty, rather than just paying lip service to it.

6.) Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand how other people feel. This idea is often mistaken with “sympathy”, which is merely feeling similarly as someone else. The perceived lack of empathy among Filipinos has long been discussed and written about. If you’ve had any negative run-ins with Filipino businesses as a customer, you will probably be inclined to believe that empathy is something more Filipino businesses and front liners should practice.

Empathy has widespread implications in the running of businesses, from understanding the perspectives of customers to managing conflicts within an organization. Now that the role of empathy in long-term relationship-building is starting to gain traction worldwide, more and more business leaders are starting to place a premium on empathetic thinking in both hiring and retention.

Conclusion

While resumes and qualifications are still important when it comes to finding the job you want, organizations these days are more likely to hire applicants based on their cultural fit, relative to their long-term goals and objectives. This means that old-school techniques for landing good jobs such as leveraging your connections may not necessarily work as well as they used to. Convalescent Plasma: Possible COVID-19 cure from recovered patients blood, FDA

Convalescent Plasma: Possible COVID-19 cure

Researchers from the United States Food and Drug Administration is considering convalescent plasma or a collected blood from patients who have already recovered from CoViD-19 — a potential source of cure against the disease.

According to the FDA press release, this strategy will take advantage to the fighting antibodies developed from the patients immune system after they recover from the illness.

FDA says that they would collect plasma – the liquid potion of the blood that does not include blood cells and platelets — from recovered patients and harvest the antibodies that would be use to cure COVID-19 patients.

According to FDA, the use of convalescent plasma has been studied in outbreaks of other respiratory infections, including the 2009-2010 H1N1 influenza virus pandemic, the 2003 SARS-CoV-1 epidemic, and the 2012 MERS-CoV epidemic.

Although promising, convalescent plasma has not been shown to be effective in every disease studied, FDA clarified. It is therefore important to determine through clinical trials, that convalescent plasma is safe and effective before they are administered to patients with COVID-19.

Currently, participation in clinical trials is only way for patients to obtain access to convalescent plasma. However FDA also stressed that these may not be readily available to all patients because of continuously increasing cases.

FDA also explains that, while clinical trials are being conducted, FDA is facilitating access to COVID-19 convalescent plasma for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections through the process of single patient emergency Investigational New Drug Applications (eINDs) for Individual patients under 21 CFR 312.310.

This process allows the use of an investigational drug for the treatment of an individual patient by a licensed physician upon FDA authorization.

FDA also set some guidelines in collecting convalescent plasma from a previously recovered COVID-19 patient:

  • COVID-19 convalescent plasma must only be collected from recovered individuals if they are eligible to donate blood (21 CFR 630.10, 21 CFR 630.15). Required testing must be performed (21 CFR 610.40) and the donation must be found suitable (21 CFR 630.30).
  • The donor must have a documented laboratory test for COVID-19.
  • The donor must complete a resolution of symptoms at least 14 days prior to donation
  • Donors must be negative for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) antibodies

A full transcript of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Message to the Nation, Laying out the National Action Plan to address COVID-19.

It has been a week since we called for a Community Quarantine and its enhanced form in Metro Manila and various parts of Luzon. We in government continue to respond to the public’s needs, mobilize resources and oversee developments. We are also addressing the COVID-19 pandemic challenges confronting our nation.

First, let me reiterate my sincerest gratitude to all our courageous frontliners in this war, especially our healthcare workers—our doctors, nurses, medical technologists, and other allied health professionals.

Maraming, maraming salamat. Asahan niyo ang suporta ng inyong gobyerno.

I am saddened by the news that the virus has claimed the lives of our doctors along the way. Lahat po sila ay bayani and not only that, talagang bumilib ako. Bihira akong sumasaludo ng tao pero ‘pag mga doktor natin, mga health workers na nadisgrasya, talagang saludo ako sa inyo. Wala na kayo dito sa mundong ito pero ganun na lang ang pagtingin ko sa inyo.

To the able officials and staff of the Inter-agency Task Force on Emerging and Infectious Diseases, thank you for staying on top of this situation.

To the brave men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, thank you as well for ensuring peace and order in these trying times.

I also thank the rest of the frontliners who ensure that basic services are provided to our people, from those manning various government agencies, groceries, banks, food establishments, and delivery services, among others. Maraming, maraming salamat po.

To the gracious members of the private sector who are foregoing profit to alleviate the suffering of our people; to the valiant volunteers who are bravely supplementing our frontliners; [and] to the noble civil society organizations who are working tirelessly in calling for donations and performing charity work— Thank you very much for your kindness, compassion and generosity.

Bayanihan Act

I especially thank Congress for granting the executive department with special powers — through the Bayanihan to Head as One Act— to the Bayanihan to Heal [rather, I’m sorry] to Heal as One Act — to effectively respond to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

I particularly thank Senate President Vicente Sotto III and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano for the strong and decisive leadership you have demonstrated in shepherding this measure to fruition during this critical time in our national history.

To the members of both houses of Congress who sponsored and voted for this measure, I express my sincerest gratitude to all of you for granting our most urgent requests. Finally, the Executive Department can move, decide and act freely for the best interest of the Filipino people during this health crisis.

National Action Plan, Inter-Agency Collaboration to Address COVID-19

The Department of National Defense and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, along with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, are now ramping up the implementation of the National Action Plan or NAP, as we speak, to reinforce the efforts of the Department of Health in containing COVID-19.

Alam mo tatlo lang ‘yan sila eh: Department of National Defense, Department of Health, Department of — ‘yung kay Rolly, DSWD and the DILG — some of the most important departments that are now in action.

Reports on our progress on the National Action Plan will be given regularly by the Secretary of National Defense, serving as the National Action Plan chair with the Secretary of the Interior and Local Government as vice chair.

The Government Commitment

To the Filipino people, rest assured that your entire government is working hand-in-hand to safeguard your health, safety and well-being in the face of the threat posed by COVID-19. We will address all the different issues brought about by this pandemic as well as ensure the protection of all of our people, especially those who are serving in the frontlines.

Supplies of food, water and other essentials will be provided to you throughout this ordeal. Financial assistance will also be extended especially to those in the margins and the vulnerable groups. Halos lahat ho makatanggap. Eh hindi naman lahat ‘yung kagaya ni — ni Bong Go. Hindi naman niya tanggapin ‘yan.

Gagawin namin ang lahat. Hindi namin kayo pababayaan.

I now call on every Filipino to participate in this war by following the guidelines set by the national government and your local officials. Nothing is more important [now] than your cooperation.

I repeat: Stay home. Huwag matigas ang ulo. The outcome of this war depends largely on you as well.

I also call on relevant agencies to ensure the speedy delivery of basic medical supplies and equipment to health facilities. From the approval, importation and to the delivery, everything must go smoothly to make sure that we do not waste time.

I… Alam mo isang bagay talaga na alam ng lahat is itong pa-dilly-dally, patamad-tamaran. Kailangan pagpasok ng papel, process mo kaagad. I-linya mo ‘yung — you line up the tables where the papers should go one after the other para madali. Cut red tapes. I do not want red tapes. I do not want so many questions. Pagka sinertify (certify) ng isang government employee ‘yan, I said, do not commit a mistake and we will all be happy and comfortable. Huwag ninyong… Kung may… Kung gusto ninyong magluko, huwag ngayon itong panahon na ito.

To my fellow public servants, let us set aside our differences and work in solidarity to overcome this pandemic. We only have one common enemy and that is COVID-19. Our transparency, integrity, accountability and responsiveness are needed and I expect all of you to exercise all these in safeguarding our fellow Filipinos.

As President, I assure you — I assure the public that the government will be on top of this situation at all times. We will not leave anyone behind.

Everyone’s Cooperation

I ask the entire country for your patience, understanding and utmost cooperation. With your support, I am confident that we will emerge triumphant. Nothing is more formidable and resilient than the Filipino spirit.

Matindi ang kalaban. But we will not surrender. Hindi tayo susuko. Tayo ay lalaban.

Yes, things will not be easy. [But] we Filipinos are tough. Mas malakas ang Pilipino sa anumang hamon. Now, we all must do what we can and must. Para sa ating bayan.

If not caring a sick person: Don’t Wear Surgical Mask, WHO

Surgical Mask

Amid the corona virus crisis, surgical mask and other personal protective equipment (PPE) run short in their supplies. As the public desperately seeking to acquire for their own personal protection against the disease.

This is even the health authorities continuously reminding the public that not everyone is required to wear a medical or surgical mask.

Earlier today, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General, published on his twitter account, seeking everyone’s help to protect health workers from corona virus or popularly known as #COVID19.

We can help the health workers – by making these personal protective equipment (PPE) including surgical mask available for them. Do not wear a surgical mask if you are well. Only wear a surgical mask if you are sick or if you are caring for someone who is sick.

In his post, Dr Ghebreyesus, uploaded a video clip of another WHO COVID-19 front-liner, Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, from Emerging Diseases and Zoonoses Unit discussing about the shortage of surgical mask for the health workers.

In the video, Dr Kerkhove said, “There is a very serious discussion about the use of medical and surgical masks.”

“We need to ensure that we prioritize the use of these masks for our front-line workers. And so we plead with you, if you do not need to wear masks at home, as an individual in the community, don’t wear a mask.”

She also warns the public not to hoard the supply of surgical masks. “Don’t hoard those masks. Make sure that those masks are available to the front-line workers. Because they are making very difficult decisions about extended use or potential reuse. And we don’t want to put our healthcare workers in any further danger.”

She also added that, “If you are not caring for a sick person at home then you don’t need to be wearing a masks. So again, please prioritize the use of these masks for our front-line workers,” said Dr Kerkhove while pleading to the people of the world.

Likewise, Singapore Health Minister Gan Kim Yong warns that wearing a face mask could only give us a false sense of security. Why? Because we are more likely to touch our faces when we constantly adjust our face mask, giving higher possibility that the virus reach our mouth and nose.
