Good news for students who are planning to work this summer! The City Government of Parañaque under the administration of Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. will again have the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) this year.

SPES is an annual program that allows high school graduates and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors, 17 to 25 years of age to have an “on-the-job training” in city government offices. It is a joint undertaking of local government units (LGUs) and the Dept. of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Program implementation in the city is managed by the Parañaque Livelihood Resource Management Office in cooperation with the City Secretariat and the Office of Councilor Benjo Bernabe, in coordination with DOLE-NCR.

SPES trainees will have a “hands-on” in work in the different types of jobs in the various offices of the city government. They will receive stipend in the duration of their training. 60% of said remuneration will be defrayed by host LGU while 40% will be provided by DOLE.

“Yearly, we sponsor SPES to give students an “off campus” learning experience in public service work. Apart from getting to know the facets of the job, they also get to develop work values, ethics, discipline and other good traits. Moreover, we would like them to have a productive activity instead of just wasting their time in worthless endeavors and with bad company. The program was also designed to give students the opportunity to earn income which they can use to pay for their enrolment fees, purchase of school uniform, books and school supplies, likewise for snacks and transportation to school and back home.”, Parañaque Mayor Jun Bernabe said.

Apart from SPES, the Parañaque City Government organizes skills training and holds job fairs to improve the employment opportunities and livelihood prospects of the citizens of the city. (Pio/www.paranaque.gov.ph)
